The Shared Seed Bank

At a student science conference, Mariam met learners from three African countries who were worried about growing food during unusually dry seasons. One group had tested crops that needed less water, while another had designed simple containers to protect seeds from heat. Instead of presenting their work as a competition, they decided to compare their results and learn from the differences.

Their teachers arranged an online meeting every two weeks. Students measured soil moisture, noted when the plants grew and uploaded photographs with dates. Mariam discovered that a method which succeeded in one place sometimes failed in another because the soil and rainfall were different. The partners agreed to describe these limits openly rather than claiming that one solution would suit every community.

At the end of the term, the group created a shared seed information booklet in Arabic, English and other local languages. It did not promise a quick answer to every farming problem. Instead, it explained how small experiments could guide better choices. Mariam realised that cooperation is strongest when people share evidence, recognise local knowledge and listen to one another.
