A Robot and a Human Decision

A small furniture factory introduced a robot that could cut wooden panels to precise measurements. The manager hoped to reduce wasted material and make repetitive work safer. Some workers feared that the machine would replace every task they performed. Instead of ignoring their concerns, the factory organised demonstrations that showed what the robot could do and where it still needed human supervision.

During the first week, a sensor reported the wrong measurement for an unusual piece of wood. The robot followed the data it received, but a technician noticed that the result did not match the design. She stopped the process and checked the sensor before any more panels were cut. Her experience prevented further waste. The team then improved its checking procedure and recorded the error for training.

Workers were offered lessons on machine maintenance, digital planning and workplace safety. The factory still needed people to choose designs, solve unexpected problems and communicate with customers. The manager concluded that technology can improve production when organisations invest in people as well as equipment. The robot was useful, but responsible decisions remained a human responsibility.
