A Library on Wheels

After heavy rain damaged the road to a village library, thirteen-year-old Kareem worried about children who had borrowed books for their school projects. The librarian could not open the building safely, and some pupils had no other quiet place to read. Kareem discussed the problem with his classmates instead of posting complaints online.

The students received permission to use an empty room beside the community centre. Families donated books in good condition, while two teachers checked that the titles were suitable for different ages. On Saturdays, volunteers loaded a small cart with books and walked along streets that were still difficult for cars to reach. They kept a notebook showing who had borrowed each title and when it should be returned.

At first, Kareem believed volunteering meant doing everything himself. Soon he learned to share responsibilities and listen to the people he hoped to help. One younger girl suggested adding picture dictionaries, and the team followed her advice. The temporary project remained useful even after the main library reopened. Kareem realised that helping a community starts with asking what it actually needs.
