A Language Partner Across the Sea

When Amr joined an online language exchange, he expected an app to correct every sentence immediately. His partner, Leila, was learning Arabic while helping him practise English. During their first call, the connection was slow, and automatic subtitles changed several names into strange words. Amr began to understand that technology could support communication without replacing careful listening.

They planned short weekly meetings about ordinary school life. Before each meeting, Amr wrote five questions and checked unfamiliar words in a dictionary. Leila sent voice notes so he could hear natural stress and rhythm. When either student made a mistake, they offered one clear correction and then continued the conversation. They also agreed not to share personal addresses or school passwords.

After six weeks, Amr was less afraid of speaking even though his grammar was not perfect. He still used digital tools to review vocabulary, but he no longer depended on subtitles to understand every sentence. Their teacher asked them to describe which habits had helped most. Amr chose preparation, regular practice and respectful feedback, and he realised that confidence develops through real communication.
